Consultant offers new direction for USD Research Park

Research parks are changing.

Instead of sprawling campuses of laboratories, research areas of the future are more likely to take the form of high-density districts of innovation.

That’s the conclusion of consultants who recently wrapped up a master plan for the USD Research Park and presented a recommendation different from what local leadership originally envisioned.

“What we’ve learned is the direction these developments are going are more to small communities or districts, integrated to where you bring things in from the outside and have a variety of activities, with the prime activity of innovation-driven companies and commercialization or research. But you might have a small amount of retail or recreation because you’re trying to create a community,” said Rich Naser, executive director of the South Dakota Technology Business Center.
