USD aseptic GMP suite nears completion

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of South Dakota is putting the finishing touches on its new Aseptic Good Manufacturing Practices Production and Training Center (USD GMP) at the GEAR Center in Sioux Falls.

The 875 sq. ft. suite will be operated by the University of South Dakota Biomedical Engineering program to assist private companies and university researchers in the production of medical devices and pharmaceuticals for pre-clinical and clinical trial applications. The construction and operations of USD GMP is being funded through a partnership between the South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development and the university.

“We’re excited to begin qualifying our facility and equipment,” says Dr. Dan Engebretson, GMP Director. “We have several early-stage companies and faculty members that will begin using these services as soon as the qualification process is complete.”

USD GMP will have the capacity to do automated fill, stoppering and capping of vials ranging from 3 ml to 120 ml, as well as the ability to provide nitrogen purge at fill and stoppering when required. USD GMP customers will have the ability to remotely monitor production activities via a secure Internet video connection.

“This is another step in developing the infrastructure and services required to support the region’s growing life sciences industry,” says Dr. Engebretson. “Our next objective is to develop and grow the GMP training and education programs to provide the educated workforce necessary to support this sector.”
